What is shoulder tendonitis?
Shoulder tendonitis, is an inflammatory injury found in the shoulder. Swelling is a natural process the body goes through upon injury. As the injury causes damage to the tendons in the shoulder, and causes swelling, it is classified as a soft tissue injury. Shoulder tendonitis is an indirect injury as the injury occurs from internal forces. Shoulder tendonitis is generally caused by overuse and repeated microtrauma. The deltoid muscle is the main muscle found in the shoulder and is the main recipient of the inflammatory process associated with shoulder tendonitis.
How does it affect softball players?
In softball, when a player pitches or throws in a manner that is not accurate, the shoulder muscles move in an abnormal manner. Repeating these movements can cause damage to the muscle through irritation and inflammation due to overuse. Also, if an athlete is competing in a gala day or tournament, the shoulder muscle can begin to tire and the muscles in the shoulder wear away, which can lead to shoulder tendonitis. The shoulder is a key element in softball, not only for throwing but batting. Recognising pain and swelling in the shoulder area early, and treating it affectively, promotes a quicker recovery.
